What is Cardiac Rehab?
Cardiac Rehab is physical
therapy for your heart muscle. You recently suffered a cardiac
event. Examples include heart attack, stents, cardiac catheters,
or open heart surgery. To some degree the muscle of your heart
has been affected. Cardiac Rehab is designed to gradually
exercise the heart muscle so you may return to your optimal
level of health.
How Does It Work?
At your
first visit you have to fill out paperwork, schedule a nutritional
appointment and undergo a graded exercise test. This test
is similar to a stress test. You will be hooked up to a heart
monitor and then you will be asked to walk on a treadmill.
This test allows us to document how your heart reacts to exercise.
This information allows us to safely care for you during your
exercise sessions in the gym.
Contact us for details about
our current Cardiac Rehab schedule, as this often changes.
You have the flexibility to change classes if you will call
and notify us at 336.783.3401. We appreciate the advance notice.
Please call if you will be absent as well. For insurance purposes
we must document reasons for all missed exercise sessions.
Your exercise program is
written individually for you based on the results of your
exercise test. The exercises take place at several stations
in the gym, utilizing various pieces of exercise equipment
including stationary bicycles, treadmills, and arm ergometer.
You will begin slowly and as your heart becomes stronger,
your activity will increase.
Because we want exercise
to become a routine part of your life, we offer your spouse
a gym membership for a discounted rate while you are involved
in the program. At each exercise session, you will get your
weight, have your blood pressure done, put a heart monitor
on and check in with the computer. At the completion of your
exercise regimen, you will get your BP taken, report your
results, take off your monitor and pick up education material
for that day.
When you come to exercise
sessions, wear comfortable clothing and supportive tennis
or gym-type shoes. There are lockers, bathrooms and showers
for your use in the facility.
A registered nurse with experience
in cardiac care and a exercise specialist will monitor you
while you exercise. All of our staff is well trained in cardiac
conditioning and rehabilitation. In addition to our regular
staff, we have consulting staff members such as a nutritionist
and counselor. They work with us as needed with one-on-one
counseling sessions.
If you have any questions
concerning the program or will have to miss a session, please
call 336.783.3401.
How Long Does
Cardiac Rehab Last?
After your first visit, you
do 36 exercise sessions. At this point you are scheduled for
another graded exercise test to document your progress. Most
insurance companies have exit criteria that you must meet
to graduate. If you graduate, you are encouraged to join the
cardiac maintenance program (call for details). If you remain
in the maintenance program, your spouse can continue his/her
membership.
If you do not pass your 2nd
graded exercise test, you are eligible with most insurance
companies to continue cardiac rehab for 36 additional sessions
as a covered service. At the completion of this set of 36
sessions you have another graded exercise test to document
progress.
Our patients and their satisfaction
is always a priority to us. For this reason, we offer suggestion
boxes as a means for you to offer constructive criticism/complaints
anonymously. We encourage you to share any ideas that will
help us better serve you. Periodically we conduct satisfaction
surveys as a means of measuring our success as well.
Educational seminars are
offered at least once a month. These are for you and your
family to attend free of charge. Contact us for dates and
times. You must attend these education seminars as part of
the Cardiac Rehab Program.
